The Thaw Onto the Freeze - A Nat and Alyssa Story
Part Ten

Alyssa woke up in a haze, trying to clear her head, remember where she was, what day it was, all of those pertinent facts. She was on her stomach, which was not the most comfortable sleeping pose, so she rolled over onto her back. The minute her bottom made contact with the mattress, everything from the morning came back to her at lighting speed. She flipped herself back onto her stomach quite quickly, surprised that even the cushiony pillow top of the mattress was painful. She heard a chuckle from about ten feet away, and even though she knew who it was, she looked over anyway to check.

It was Nat, sitting in the love seat, reading a book. “Forget for a moment,” he asked her. Again, for some reason she felt shy around him. She nodded, though barely moving her head up and down. He noticed the change in her demeanor, she knew he did. “What say you get up off the bed, young lady, and we finish this?”

She knew it wasn’t a question. He had phrased it as a question, but it wasn’t a question. Moving slowly, she got off the bed and gingerly walked over to stand beside him at the loveseat. “We addressed your failure to tend to your studies, complete assignments, homework, assigned reading, essentially all class work this morning,” Nat said looking directly into her eyes, his voice quiet, but still communicating his displeasure.

She immediately wanted to look down, or somewhere else, but Alyssa remembered when she had done that this morning. It hadn’t turned out too well, as it had helped reinforce his point about her lack of respect. Still it was near agony keeping her eyes on his.

“This afternoon, what’s left?” He asked her.

Alyssa just blinked a few times, she hadn’t expected that. He usually just told her why she was being punished. Think brain, she willed herself. He went over this in the very beginning, just think. She could see the look of displeasure deepening into an outright scowl. “Alyssa,” he said, his voice communicating the warning very clearly.

“Uh,” she attempted to stall for time, “disrespect,” Alyssa definitely remembered that one, it is why she hadn’t looked away a second ago. “Um…disrespect, and…um..”

She felt herself being pulled over Nat’s knee, none too gently, she pretty much flew over, and within a second her skirt was flipped up onto her back. He took a minute to do something, she wasn’t exactly sure what it was, but she could feel him fumbling with the collar of her shirt, so she would guess that he was pinning the skirt to the shirt collar again.

Then, nearly out of nowhere, his handed landed on her bottom with a loud swat! Before she even had time to react, another one came raining down. He spanked her one after another until she was begging him to stop, tears streaming down her face. She hadn’t expected any of this. Nat usually eased into things, even if he was madder than a hornets nest he always seemed to walk her through everything, to not seem so mad, and cold, and mean.

While she felt his hand on the lower part of her back, he did not gently massage or whisper to her to help her calm down, as he usually would. No, this time he just waited in silence which was almost painful for her to endure.

It took another few minutes, but she managed to get herself under control. Alyssa hoped that meant he would stand her up, take her into his arms and hold her, even if it was quick. Instead, his hand moved from where it had been resting on her lower back, to her bottom. Whenever that happened, it never turned out well for her. There was another excruciatingly long pause, and then Nat finally, finally began to speak, sporadically landing a smack to her bottom while he did.

“Now, Alyssa, I must say I’m shocked and a tad bit appalled. As you requested assistance to alleviate these feelings of guilt that you have, asking that I select and administer appropriate punishment for your prior actions so that you may be able to feel that you’ve paid the piper, I’d expect you to know the exact reasons that you are receiving each and every one of these spankings. Why I have sentenced you to punishments that I have selected. So, I want to be sure you’re listening clearly young lady. Because if I am to continue to help you with this endeavor of yours, continue to mete out punishments for these past actions, I’m going to be damn sure you know the exact reason every swat is landing on this bottom.”

Nat accented the last few words with crisper smacks to her already red tush. The small squeak he heard from her told him that she had felt every one of them. Lifting her up off his knees, Nat stood her on her feet, and guided her to be right in front of him, between his knees. “It’s very important, Lyssa. Very important. In a month, or three months when you remember this day, and the punishments that were handed down, I want you to also remember why you received each and every one of them. Do you understand?”

Alyssa started to nod and opened her mouth to say yes. But she wasn’t actually sure what he meant, not one hundred percent sure at least. So, instead she closed her mouth and thought for a moment. Then, after biting her lip, looked at Nat, and replied, “I’m not sure” and hoped it wasn’t an answer that would get her into trouble.

When he nodded, accepting the answer, and gave her a small smile, she felt better. Alyssa hated telling people that she didn’t know something, or she wasn’t sure of something. It always made her nervous. So, the small smile from Nat did a good deal to relax her, at least when it came to the answer to his question.

“That’s okay, thank you for answering honestly,” he said to her. “It will always be my preference to take the time to explain things to you so that you understand them, Alyssa. It is much better than finding out later that you didn’t know, or didn’t understand and were too embarrassed to ask questions. Okay?”

He really did know her too well, Alyssa thought to herself, mentally shaking her head. Or, at least she meant for it to be mentally. It accidentally happened outright physically, immediately bringing a frown to Nat’s face. Thus, sending Alyssa straight to panic mode. “No, I mean, yes, I mean, crap!” Alyssa clapped both hands over her mouth, shut her eyes and took a deep breath and then started humming to herself. She made it through the first two verses of “My Favorite Things” before she was able to open her eyes and look at Nat.

If the look on her face reflected anything that she felt at that moment, it was a combination of terrified, and embarrassment. “I didn’t mean to shake my head at you,” she began, stuttering as she spoke. It happened when she was nervous. She closed her eyes. The only way that she was going to be able to get through talking to him was to close her eyes.

“I was thinking to myself that you really know me too well sometimes, and I shook my head to myself and I thought I did it mentally, but it kind of actually happened and I didn’t mean to. Because what I meant to say was that, I understand.” She opened one eye, checking to see how angry he looked. He didn’t look that mad, it appeared safe, so she opened the other one. Nat was just smiling.

So, Alyssa gave him a tentative smile and said, “I’m sorry?”

At that, he chuckled, took her hand, gave it a kiss, and said to her, “Alyssa, as you just said, I know you pretty well. I’m not angry because you shook your head at me, or because you said crap. Don’t worry about that.”

“Um, I’ll try,” she told him.

“Good,” he replied. “That’s all anyone can realistically ask of you. Now why is it that I want to make sure you understand the reasons behind each and every punishment that you receive?”

Alyssa was about to open her mouth to reply, but then she realized it wasn’t a question, Nat was going to keep talking, he was going to explain.

“Alyssa, when you look back at today, two months from now, I don’t want you to think, I was punished a whole lot and I was in pain for days and it hurt so bad, Nat was really mad at me about school stuff, but I don’t remember exactly what, something to do with my first semester at State, I just remember I got punished.” Nat heard her giggle a bit, and gently flicked her nose, giving her a small smile. While it was a serious topic, he was glad that her nervousness was dissipating.

“No, sweetie, when you look back on this day, I want you to say, wow I was paddled this many times, but I know I deserved it. It was a punishment for not doing school work in every class my first semester at State.”

He saw her nod, and this time, he knew she understood what it was that he wanted her to grasp.

“And just to reconfirm, why were you punished this morning?

He heard her suck in her breath, then pause, finally there was the quiet reply, “because in the first semester that I was at State I didn’t do any of the assignments or keep up with the classwork, homework, assigned reading, and basically the responsibilities of a student.”

“That’s right,” Nat said, taking her right hand into his and giving it a gentle squeeze. “And I know that after we’ve finished today, you’re going to take it upon yourself to learn the material that you would have, had you been paying attention and doing as you were supposed to.”

He saw her nod quickly and then say “yes, sir.”

“Good,” he continued, “otherwise I know four professors that will be receiving some hand written letters that were penned earlier this morning.”

Alyssa appeared to turn a shade lighter, and Nat chuckled despite himself. Giving her hand another light squeeze he said gently, “don’t worry about it now, sweetheart. As long as you do what you’re supposed to, those letters will stay exactly where they are.”

Nat could tell his words helped, but didn’t alleviate the fear that had suddenly built up in her mind. “Now, there are a few other things that need to be addressed this afternoon, regarding that first semester. All of which you will be punished for.”

He saw her head drop down. He didn’t scold her for it this time. Instead he tucked his finger under her chin and gently lifted her head back up to where he could look her in the eye. “Tell me why you’re going to be punished this afternoon, Alyssa?”

Alyssa automatically felt her head drop down so she was staring at the tops of the shiny uniform shoes, today was giving her a whole new perspective on what it meant to ‘hang your head in shame’. The moment she did so, she cringed, knowing that she was supposed to remain looking at Nat the entire time. She was supposed to take responsibility for her wrong doing, face the consequences, even if that mean looking into Nat’s disappointed or angry face.

Before she had a chance to move, however, she felt Nat hook a finger underneath chin and firmly pull her head back up. She was surprised he hadn’t scolded her. When they were eye to eye, Alyssa looked for something in his eyes, something that would tell her how mad he was about her doing what she just had. She saw nothing.

He just held her head up, forcing her to maintain eye contact, and said, “Tell me why you’re going to be punished this afternoon, Alyssa?”

Taking a deep breath, Alyssa replied, “this afternoon I am going to be punished, still for things about the first semester at state. Not participating in class, not showing appropriate respect for my professors, not using my course time wisely or for the intended purpose, violating school rules like er drinking, failing tests.”

She watched as Nat nodded at each one of her answers, signaling that they were correct. Thinking for a second, just to make sure she covered everything, she then added, “and the grades I received that semester.” It surprised her when Nat didn’t nod in agreement with that one.

“Actually, Lyssa, that is the one thing that you won’t be punished for, at least not today,” Nat said. Unsure of how to react, she just stared at him, eyes wide. To her annoyance, he laughed, and then tussled her hair. “Oh you’ll be punished for those grades, don’t let me put that seed of doubt into your mind accidentally. It just won’t be today.”

She was about to argue with him, but then thought better of it and clamped her mouth shut. He seemed to know it too, which was infuriating, as he said, “wise choice, young lady.”

Alyssa didn’t reply, she didn’t know what to say in response.

“One other thing before we start,” Nat looked at her with that look she hated, it was that piercing stare that always had her telling the truth. “About how many absences would you say you had, average? Just take one class, and answer.”

Alyssa gritted her teeth and looked at the ground, scuffing her shoe a bit on the rug, slowly moving it back and forth. Why did he have to ask that question? Of all the questions he could come up with, why that one? When she didn’t answer, she heard him sigh, quite loudly. That was probably not a good thing. “More than the three allowed, I gather,” he stated.

Though she didn’t look up, Alyssa nodded her head up and down.

“Nod your head when I reach the appropriate number,” Nat said. Alyssa was surprised he was making this so easy for her. Though she also had a feeling that whatever punishment was going to be involved was going to be worse because of it.

“Four,” she heard him say. She continued to move her foot back and forth in the carpet.

“Five,” he continued after about ten seconds. Not daring to move her head, Alyssa just continued whatever imaginary design her foot was drawing.

“Six,” he said, Alyssa heard a slight edge to his voice. She could lie and nod her head. But that never turned out well, the lying thing. So she just kept her head down.

“Seven,” she heard Nat say, his voice now terse. The tone made her nervous, he was close. While she couldn’t be sure of the exact number, she had a pretty good idea of what the average was.

“Eight,” Nat’s voice was now past having an edge, moving closer to being hard, stern, cold and whatever other adjectives she could think of. Luckily she wouldn’t have to because he could stop counting. Alyssa nodded her head up and down at that point. She waited for yelling, a lecture, something. Nothing came. When she did manage to look up at him all she saw was regular Nat. Not even a look of disappointment.

Nat could tell by the look on her face that she was confused. “Thank you for being honest, Alyssa,” he said to her. She just nodded, somehow rendered speechless. “Were you sick all of those times?”

He watched her shake her head and then whisper, “no.”

“Did you tell your professors that you were sick?” He asked her. Immediately she went back to staring at her shoes which gave him the answer he was looking for. But he wasn’t going to accept it. “Lyssa,” he said in a warning tone. “I’ve let you slide a number of times, not answering me with a verbal answer. That may have been a mistake on my part. Know that I did so because I thought the situation called for it, either because of your exemplary behavior during your punishment or because of the conversation and the emotional state you were in. Don’t make me regret doing so young lady. Because we will make time to go back and mete out appropriate punishment for each and every one of those times, if necessary.”

He saw her body tense up at that statement. “Now, raise your head, do me the courtesy of looking at me when you speak to me, and answer my question.”

It took her a minute, but she did as he instructed, looking up at him and whispering her answer, “yes, sir, I did.”

“I see,” Nat said. “Well, that is just another of many behaviors we’ll be addressing. For now, though, back downstairs, let’s go.”

They made it all the way to the living room in near complete silence. Nat was the first to enter and he went and took a seat on the couch, waiting for Alyssa to come into the room and over to where he was. It always took her a while, whether she was in trouble or not. She did appear in front of him, after about three minutes.

Nat couldn’t be sure whether it was her apprehensiveness that took that time, or her walking slower due to some pain she was in. He wasn’t going to dwell on it though. Standing in front of him, she looked very nervous. He took her hands in his, as he often did, guided over a bit more and then nodded towards the coffee table. The one that was directly across from the couch where he was seated.

She paled the moment she saw it, turned towards him and gave him a pleading look. He shook his head, and then nodded in a gesture fashion towards the coffee table again. “Lyssa, take a seat,” he ordered, purposely keeping his voice hard. He saw her flinch a bit, and knew that his tone had the intended effect. She went over and took a seat on the coffee table, attempting to lower herself gently onto the hard surface. But when all was said and done, she still had a look of paid spread across her face once she was seated.

He simply regarded her for a few moments. He was forming his thoughts when she spoke first, “are you going to spank me?”

Nat chuckled, he couldn’t help himself. “Yes, Alyssa, you can count on the fact that I will be spanking you today, possible tomorrow, and over the time that you’re here, during the storm.” The look on her face wasn’t quite what he expected however. Tilting his head a bit, he asked her, “does that answer your question, or was that not what you were asking?”

She shook her head, “no, I mean yes that answered my question, thank you.”

He wasn’t sure if he believed her answer, but decided to let it go. Nat looked her over once more, mostly to reassure himself that she would be okay to take more. He’d heard of and seen Alyssa endure more, physically, than he’d ever thought possible, and not just from spankings. She pushed herself in sports, exercise, and everything else possible, while working insane hours and managing somewhat of a social life.

He’d seen her hurt by others, wounded badly by others, intentionally. He’d visited her in the hospital after surgeries, and watched as she forced herself to recover and bounce back at quicker than normal speed. Physically he didn’t worry about her all that much. Frankly, sometimes he was surprised that a spanking actually had any effect on her. But he knew it was the emotional component that came with it that made the difference. She was okay, and she’d be okay to go on this afternoon.

“All right, young lady,” he said after a moment, “it’s time to proceed further through this very long list here.” Taking hold of her arm he helped her stand before turning her and pulling her back down over his lap. She didn’t fight him, but she didn’t seem too happy about it. Nervous was the better word, really. She seemed nervous. “Put your hands behind your head, interlace your fingers,” Nat instructed. She complied, a moment of hesitation, Nat noted, but then she seemed to find her resolve.

“Alyssa,” he said, placing his hand on her lower back, “I’m going to ask you one more time. Did I answer your question? Or was that not what you were asking earlier? You seem very nervous and on edge all of a sudden.” He watched as the stiffness dissipated from her body, her head and feet dropping towards the floor simultaneously.
