The Deep Freeze – A Nat and Alyssa Story
Part One
Note: This is a continuation of "The Thaw onto the Freeze"
The next morning, Nat awoke at 5AM, just as he did, almost, every morning. It took him a moment to shift his brain into gear, and, sense that he was in his own bed. Alyssa had fallen asleep quickly, the night before. His worry, about whether he’d be able to stay awake, long enough, to get her to sleep, and actually get back into his own bed, had not been needed.
One of the first things, Nat noticed, upon stepping out of bed, was the room was markedly colder, than the previous day. As his was typically one of the warmest rooms, in the house, just by some fluke, in the way the ventilation system had been installed, he imagined the rest of the house, was a good deal colder. Wearing sweats and slippers, he headed down the hall, pausing outside Alyssa’s room.
He didn’t want to wake her, by accident, but he also didn’t want her to get sick, from the cold. Carefully, he quietly opened the door, and saw that he had been right. She had kicked off half of the blankets, throughout the night. As quietly, as possible, he went over to the bed, and untangled the multiple blankets, that were down by her feet. He carefully pulled them up, and lay them over her, making sure she was entirely covered. Placing a soft kiss on her forehead, he left the room, pulling the door closed behind him. He knew it’d be a while before she woke up.
Nat continued on his way downstairs, half asleep, and prepared to make coffee, and some breakfast. It was at this point, that he looked out the kitchen window. The entire front yard, the entire street, everything within sight, was completely frozen over. There were icicles hanging from rooftops and tree branches, the roads were shiny and slick with ice. To top it off the snow was still coming down, at an increasingly quick speed, nearing whiteout conditions. Two storms, so close together. It would cripple the area, again.
As he poured coffee into his favorite mug, he couldn’t help but chuckle as he thought to himself, ‘the one thing he could be thankful for, was not having to fight Alyssa on being here, dragging her back in from the storm, literally.’ The memory of picking her up, and carrying her inside, floated back to him, for a moment. It was only weeks ago.
At around 10, Alyssa appeared, in the kitchen. “Ah,” Nat said to her. “I was wondering when you were going to wake up. Have a seat, I’ll get your coffee and protein shake.”
He got up to grab the items, as Alyssa slowly approached the table. “Um,” he heard her begin, very hesitantly, “could I, maybe, stand?”
“What did I say, when you asked me last night?” He replied, not even turning to look at her, instead, continuing to gather the items necessary, to mix up the protein drink.
“You said, that, anyone that was going to eat dinner, and I’m guessing, that means breakfast and lunch too, will do so, sitting down at the table.”
“And, have I given you, some, reason, to think, that I, might, have changed my mind, on that?” he asked, this time, glancing up at her.
“No,” she replied, fiddling with the drawstring, on her pajama pants, “But I’m not really eating anything. I’m drinking a protein shake. So, it doesn’t really count, under your whole ‘anyone eating will sit at the table’, and, so, I just thought, that you might …”
Alyssa stopped talking, when she saw the look on Nat’s face. Her brain chose that moment, to kick in, and get her to do the really smart thing, which was to shut up.
“Are you back talking, Alyssa?” Nat asked her.
“No,” she replied.
“Really?” he asked, as he brought the protein shake over, and set it on the table. She was about to reach for it, but he moved it away. “No, not yet.”
Confused, Alyssa stepped back, and kept her hands by her sides. The next thing to appear, on the table, was the steaming mug of coffee. Oh, she really wanted that one. But, the warning look from Nat, told her not to touch it, either.
“It sounded, a lot, like back talk, to me, young lady,” Nat said, as he walked over to the counter. Alyssa was doomed. Once Nat decided something was something, there really was no getting out of it. “And it’s not something, I’m prepared to put up with, all day. So, what do you say, we try to nip this in the bud, yes?”
Alyssa didn’t respond, she just blinked, watching his every move.
“Am I going to have to put you in time out? Or, are you in a mindset, where you can take your punishment, without issue?”
“Nat, it was just a question,” Alyssa said.
“Time out, it is,” he replied, pointing to the corner. “You know what to do, pants down to your knees, panties too, nose in the corner, arms behind your back, grab your elbows.”
Alyssa stomped to the corner, literally stomped, making sure, that every step she took reverberated throughout the room. She knew that she would get in trouble for that, too, but she was pissed off, at the moment. She had just asked a question. That was all she had done. She had asked, if she could stand up, instead of sit down, at the table. That was all. He was just being an ass hat.
She wasn’t sure how long she stood there, long enough that her legs started to hurt. Finally, she heard Nat say, from behind her, probably sitting at the table, “All right, Alyssa, turn around, please.”
She did, though, she knew her face, probably, showed that she was, still, not, one bit, sorry. “Still not one bit of contrition, huh?” Nat asked, though they both knew it was rhetorical. “All right, then.” He stood up, walked over to her and scooped her up, while simultaneously putting his foot on one of the chairs closest to him, elevating his knee quite a bit. He easily tossed her over his one leg, and held her there.
She hadn’t seen it in his hand, but Alyssa recognized it, the moment she felt it, it was a wooden spatula. It came swinging down on her bottom. On top of the residual pain she had from the other day, the pain was tremendous. She bit down on her lip, not wanting to cry out. She wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction.
He landed twelve hard, solid swats to her bottom, before she heard him put the wooden instrument down, on the table. She expected to be placed, back on her feet. Instead, he lifted her up in the air, placed his foot back on the ground, and dropped her, none too gently, onto the chair with the wooden slats for a seat. That caused her to cry out in pain, and tears to fall. She couldn’t hold that back, no matter how much she tried. Nat didn’t seem to have much pity for her, though. He merely pushed the protein shake in front of her, and said, “drink.”
Coffee? Her brain thought. Where is the coffee? Give me the coffee. She was waking up, just a bit, though, and decided to keep her mouth shut, and drink the protein shake. Alyssa considered drinking it as slowly as possible. However, that would mean sitting in this chair for a really, long time, and she wasn’t a fan of that idea. But, she wasn’t really a fan of whatever else Nat was going to come up with, either. She couldn’t believe him. She hadn’t done anything wrong, she had just asked a question.
All too quickly she finished the drink. Nat seemed to notice the second that glass was empty, too. She felt the chair being pulled out. “Get up, back to the corner,” Nat said.
“I’m not done with breakfast,” she said to him, “and it’s your stupid rule that I have to eat three meals a day. So, you have to let me finish my meal, otherwise you’ll be a hypocrite, when you turn around, and try to punish me, for not eating three meals.”
“What part of breakfast, do you have left to eat,” Nat asked, his tone was icy. She really should have picked up on that. Alyssa was semi awake, after all. But the problem was, she didn’t have any caffeine in her.
“Uh, hello? My coffee, duh,” Alyssa replied.
“Alyssa,” Nat bent down, so he was eye to eye with her. “Coffee, for you, is a privilege, one you should consider gone, and that you will have to earn back.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?!” Alyssa exploded. “You can’t do that! You said, we agreed, I signed that damn list of rules!”
“All right, I’ve had enough,” Nat said, standing back up, “Alyssa, corner, now!”
Alyssa didn’t move. She wasn’t going to do it. She wasn’t going to follow any more of these stupid rules. How dare he?!
“Alyssa,” she heard Nat’s voice, the warning was unmistakable, “if I have to move you, I will, but it won’t bode well for you, in the end.”
Alyssa remained where she was. She hated him. It wasn’t more than a minute, before she felt herself being lifted off the chair. Nat carried her, the ten feet, over to the corner, and placed her down on the floor. Squatting down, so he was nearly on the floor with her, he said, gently, “Alyssa, I don’t know what is going on, but I wish you would stop. Until you are ready to behave, you will stay here, do you understand?”
She refused to answer.
“Alyssa,” he said, this time taking hold of her chin, and forcing her to look at him.
“I. Hate. You.” Alyssa said to him, and unlike yesterday, she didn’t feel the least bit bad for saying it.
“I’m sorry to hear that,” Nat said to her. He stood up, dusted off his palms on his pant legs, and said, “when you are ready to behave, you may come out of the corner. Not a second before that.” He turned and left.
An hour later, she was still there. But, she had begun a conversation with herself, and that was never a good thing. She was starting to question what the heck she was doing. Why had she cursed at Nat? And, technically, it wasn’t written anywhere in that stupid set of rules that coffee was part of breakfast, though she did think it said in there somewhere that she could have one per day. But, they agreed that it would be with breakfast. This whole thing had started, because she had asked a question. That was all, she had asked a question, and he had gotten mad at her.
Two hours later, her resolve was beginning to let up. Unfortunately, Nat’s patience with the situation, had worn thin. He’d entered the kitchen to make lunch. “Stand up, Alyssa,” he snapped out. “You’re in time out, not lounging around, killing time. Stand up, and face that wall, now.”
Slowly, she did as he ordered. He was glad of that, he wasn’t sure how much energy he had left, to deal with her today. Instead of working at the counter, chopping vegetables, he brought everything over to the table. He would be a lot closer to where she was, and it would be a lot easier to speak to her. “I really don’t understand what’s going on with you,” Nat began. “While it might have been painful, all in all, I thought we had a pretty good day, yesterday. So I don’t understand where this attitude and behavior is coming from.”
He waited for her to reply, but didn’t hear anything.
“I’d really like to know what’s going on, Alyssa. I can’t help anything, if you don’t talk to me,” Nat tried again.
“You want me to talk,” she said, still facing the wall. “Why, so you can beat me for everything I say?”
Nat was very taken aback by that comment. He paused, and considered the options in how to handle the situation. Finally, he continued chopping up vegetables, as he said, “we’re going to be having vegetable and barley soup for lunch. Are you going to want to eat lunch?”
“Gross to the power of ten,” Alyssa said.
“All right,” Nat said, “then why don’t you go upstairs to your room.”
She turned to look at him, and almost tripped over the clothes at her feet. There was a look of shock on her face, though. “What?” she asked him.
“Right your clothes, Alyssa, and then you can go up to your room,” Nat told her.
He watched from the corner of his eye as she quickly pulled up her clothes, and then slowly started to move forward. “Go to my room…until when? Until I have a better attitude? Until I have better behavior?”
“Until you feel like returning,” Nat said nonchalantly, realizing now, that this would be the best approach.
“What about lunch, I’m supposed to eat three meals a day, it’s your rule, remember?” she said accusingly.
“You can grab whatever you like, in the fridge,” he told her. “I’m pretty sure we have some of those pop tarts you like in the top cabinet. Your coffee is by the microwave, you’ll have to heat it up.”
With that, he scooped all the vegetables onto the cutting board, carried them over to the stove and dumped them into the water. Placing the board by the sink, he washed his hands and then left the room, leaving a very surprised Alyssa.
Something was wrong. Although she was majorly creeped out by what had just happened, it didn’t stop her from immediately going over towards the microwave, retrieving the cup of coffee, and nuking it for a minute. Taking it out of the microwave a moment later, she took a sip, ‘oh, if there was ever a need to describe heaven, that taste was it.’
He had told her to go to her room. It was odd. And he’d essentially said ‘eat whatever you want.’ That was even odder. Her appetite was gone, she rarely had one anyway. So she took the coffee, and headed up to her room. Closing the door behind her, she went and sat down on the bed. Stretching out, she placed the coffee on to the night stand next to her. Her room?
Possibly. In one weeks’ time Nat had purchased a brand new bed, along with a few other items of furniture, just because it was going to become, ‘her room’. She’d brought a few personal items. Framed photos, scarf. But that was it.
“It’s good,” her mind said to her. “because it isn’t a lot to pack.” She sat down on the bed, forgetting for a moment that she had a recently spanked bottom. Even though it was a pillow top mattress, the fast descent made the impact of landing harder than it could have been, bringing pain with it. “Shit,” she exclaimed out loud, quickly rolling over onto her stomach.
“Alyssa, what is the rule in this house about cursing?” Alyssa said, out loud, using a voice that was an imitation of Nat’s.
Going back to her own, she said, “uh, who cares, given that I’ve heard you curse all the time at school, it is a ridiculous f*!king rule!”
Not moving off her stomach, she worked her way up to the top of the bed, and then somehow managed to get the comforter and blankets out from underneath her body. “Finally, I can do what I want. Of course, this has to happen when the weather is at the point where it’s impossible to leave. But finally, finally, Nat’s given up on his stupid rules thing. So stupid to begin with.”
But, even as she spoke out loud, her enthusiasm and happiness were lacking. I’ll just take a nap, she thought to herself. Take a nap, wake up and it will be like starting the day over, or turning a new leaf or whatever, and whatever.
Adjusting the pillow under her head, she pulled the other blanket up around her. It was the extra one that Nat had brought in last night. Because he didn’t want her to be cold, she remembered. Because he cared. Argh! Though a small part of her wanted to get up, and go fix the entire situation, the majority of her was just exhausted. So she stayed in bed. Take a nap, and then I’ll go fix everything.
When she woke up, Alyssa was very surprised to find it was much later than expected. Her idea of taking a nap, meant that she had intended to sleep two, possibly three hours, tops. She awoke at close to eight o’clock, that evening. There was no doubt that she had slept through dinner. Another rule that she would have broken. Practically jumping out of bed, she ran down the stairs, anxious to find Nat. Running in furry slippers, not the smartest thing in the world. She tripped on the third to last step and flew down the rest, landing in a heap at the bottom.
She was more surprised, than anything, though once the shock wore off, she knew that she’d hurt, and probably be bruised, tomorrow. When she started to get up, she could see that Nat was sitting in the living room, reading. She could tell, that he had seen her fall, but he hadn’t come over to help her. Forcing herself to get up, the rest of the way, she moved slowly into the living room. “Hey, Nat, can I, uh, could I talk to you?” she asked him, hesitatingly.
“Not right now, Alyssa,” he replied, ear marking the page he was on, and setting the book down. “I’m actually on my way to bed. Whatever it is will have to keep until tomorrow.”
Alyssa was shocked. She had expected him to say ‘yes’, and pull her into his lap, so they could talk. Not to be getting up from the chair, and start walking out of the room. He had almost exited the living room, when she cried out, “Nat please, I’m sorry, please let me talk to you!”
He stopped for a moment, and then continued walking, saying over his shoulder, “You already have my answer.”
Alyssa watched his back walk out of the room, and up the stairs, disappearing onto the second floor. Clamping her hand over her mouth she began to sob. She let herself fall to the ground, curl up into a ball, and just cry.
