The White Out Part Three - A Nat and Alyssa Story
Nat watched the young woman in the corner. It had already been twenty minutes and he was truly shocked that the pencil hadn’t fallen or a sarcastic comment hadn’t been thrown his way or for that matter the pencil. This would probably be the first time he had ever witnessed Alyssa Caruthers actually doing what she was told. Yes, she had told him multiple times that when he gave advice to her she actually listened and did what he said, but this was the first time he actually saw it with his own eyes.
That being said, he had to wonder how long he was going to have to wait her out. Knowing her, she’d stay there half the night just to spite him. Yes, if he knew Alyssa correctly she’d attempt to wait him out, trying to get him to fold and tell her it was okay to come out of this unusual time out that he had created.
The pencil was a last minute idea. He chuckled silently to himself, it must have infuriated her. It was the one thing that would command that at least half of her concentration was occupied facing that corner. He figured as long as she was starring at a blank wall she might get some thinking done, and with the fear of the pencil falling she wouldn’t be able to talk the entire time she was there. Because the one thing that Alyssa was very, very good at was talking about absolutely nothing for long periods of time. She’d do it just to torture him until he let her out to get her to be quiet. Yes, Nat thought to himself, the pencil was quite an inspired idea.
He did have to wonder what would happen if it fell, or any of the other things he warned about took place. In the heat of his anger he had tossed her over his knee. But things had calmed down now. Would he really be able to follow through on the threat to do so again? He’d have to. If he didn’t, well he knew Alyssa would walk all over him for eternity and beyond. But she wasn’t his daughter or his niece or even a child. Was it even possible to follow up on the threat to spank her given that she was a grown adult?
Alyssa continued to stare at the speck of dirt on the wall as the mental argument played out in her head. Her arrogant side was losing and it didn’t take long before silent tears began slipping from her eyes. The damn pencil was going to fall any minute. “Um, Nat?” she called out, unsure of how this worked, “can I talk to you, I mean, I’d like to explain-“ at that point the pencil fell to the floor causing her to jump three inches back and gasp loudly before turning around to look at Nat.
“Pick it up,” was all he said. Alyssa bent down, grabbed the pencil and stood back up looking at Nat to see what to do next. “You’d like to explain?” He said indicating for her to finish her sentence.
“I’d like to explain what happened tonight and apologize,” Alyssa said, not quite able to meet his eyes. She knew they were probably filled with anger and looks of despise and hatred.
“All right, come over here” Nat beckoned for her to come over to where he was.
Walking back around the table to where he was Alyssa dragged her feet wanting to do this and not wanting to at the same time. When she reached him the only thing that she could think to do was hand him the pencil. Eyes rooted to the floor she held it up for him to take. A minute and a half later it was still in her hands.
“Look at me,” she heard him say. Alyssa knew that if she did that she was going to start crying. Squeezing her eyes shut to prevent any possible tears from coming out she gathered as much courage as she could find and finally raised her eyes to meet his. As usual she couldn’t read the look in them, so she assumed that it was pure hatred. Not trusting herself to speak just yet she simply held the pencil up a little higher waiting for him to take it from her.
“Oh no, you keep that for now,” he told her. “You may end up back in that corner again tonight, we’ll see.”
Alyssa’s eyes dropped immediately as she felt them filling with tears.
Nat found it interesting how she couldn’t look him in the eye. Alyssa who was usually so confident, so brazen, who had no problem what so ever looking someone directly in the eye and telling them that they were full of shit, couldn’t even face him. He waited a second or two, giving her a chance to begin. She kept her eyes firmly rooted to the floor. “Alyssa,” he said, realizing his voice was wary and forcing himself to change the tone, “look up at me and tell me what you have to say or march yourself back into that corner.”
He could see Alyssa’s body visibly stiffen. He was quite aware that she liked to take her time when deciding what to say and it must have really burned her to be ordered to speak or leave. Slowly she raised her head, Nat could see remnant pools of tears the corners of her eyes, however the emotion was now gone from them. “I’m sorry,” she said bitterly.
The biting tone she used made him want to laugh and it was a true struggle to keep a serious look on his face. “Oh, I think that you can do better than that,” Nat told her as he pointed back to the corner. “You could fake a better apology, Alyssa, you weren’t voted class drama queen for no reason. Back in the corner.”
Alyssa wanted to kick him straight in the shin which was conveniently located a few inches from her left foot. He continued to point to that corner and give her that horrible authoritative look. Of course she could fake a better apology. If he wanted a heart felt apology with a touching story explaining the evening, she could do that, it would just be a lie, that was all.
She looked back down at the floor, disregarding the order to move back into the corner. Yes, a good kick in the shin was awfully tempting at the moment. Especially given the internal struggle she was having with her brain. It isn’t like it would be that hard to play out some sob story for him. She did it for multiple others. However, the last time she had lied to Nat he had given her office detention for two weeks. It was a punishment that technically didn’t even exist, detentions stopped once you reached the college level. However, because she trusted Nat, and partly because he scared the bejeezus out of her, she had swallowed her pride and attended every single one of those detention hours. It had been two weeks of torture, sitting in the government office conference room for two hours everyday hand copying the student code of conduct. And that had been at school. To be honest, Alyssa was a little afraid of what would happen if she lied to him here. Maybe he really would kill her? She really was stupid sometimes, she couldn’t help but silently chastise herself.
Finally, she looked back up at him and said, “I am sorry,” this time her voice genuine. She watched as his arm dropped down and he gave a small nod indicating for her to continue. “I really, I behaved terribly, Nat and I am really sorry. I just, I didn’t want to be stuck here. It’s just been so weird,” Alyssa could feel tears starting to come to her eyes and spill down her cheeks again. “Like, you were my college advisor, I wouldn’t have gotten my degree if you hadn’t been there, but, but, but I don’t want to know you outside of school,” Alyssa was full on crying by now.
She felt Nat gently guide her into a chair as she continued. “and I mean, you know, the only reason that I got that stupid degree was because you were always yelling at me, and giving me non existent detentions and like being all scary and mean and you know like making me follow the rules. And I didn’t want you to see what I was like, like, uh, like, in real life.” Alyssa totally lost control of her emotions at that point, pulling her legs up to her chest, so that her entire body was curled on the chair, wrapping her arms around her knees, burying her head into her knees and sobbing so hard her body was noticeably shaking.
Nat sat back in his chair and simply observed the situation, both what was happening with Alyssa in front of him, and going over the events of the past few years that had led up to it. After a few moments he placed his hand on her arm, trying to be comforting and quietly said her name. He could hear the sobbing go down a notch. Taking a deep breath he gently rubbed her arm and said her name again, attempting to calm her.
Within a few minutes the sobbing had tapered down to hiccups and sniffling. Nat rubbed her arm once again and gently said “Alyssa, look at me,” tapping her arm lightly a few times. Removing his hand and sitting back in the chair Alyssa simultaneously lifted her head up to look at him. Her face was streaked with tears, eyes blood shot, nose and cheeks red. “I’m so sorry,” she said looking at him, her lip quivering. Most people would have pegged it as a fake pout however Nat knew the look well. It meant she was about fifteen seconds away from sobbing again unless he managed to prevent it.
Leaning forward, Nat took her hand, looked into her eyes and said, “it’s okay, Alyssa, look at me.” He waited for her eyes to meet his. “Alyssa, it’s okay, we’re gonna put this behind us. I forgive you for tonight’s events, and we’re just going to start fresh tomorrow. Okay?”
Nat watched carefully as the sobbing that had been about to begin turned to surprise and then confusion.
“What?” Alyssa asked him, her brain foggy from the amount of tears she had just shed. Was it possible that he was just going to let everything go? “You’re not mad at me?”
He was holding her hand. It was peculiar. It was, she wanted to say inappropriate, strange. It was strangely comforting. Alyssa glanced down at the hands before looking back up at him. “What’s the catch?” She waited for the explosion that was sure to bring.
