The Continuing Storm Part One
The forecasts negativity did not let up. Snow. It was going to snow, and that was it. That could mean only one thing: the entire city, scratch that, the majority of the Eastern seaboard, was going to remain shut down. Nat shook his head in disapproval of the weather as he sipped his second mug of coffee at eight that morning. The weather was relentless, never ending snow, which meant that his wife, Helen and daughter, Tina, would remain at the high school with the other parents and students that had been displaced there. Alyssa would spend more time as his houseguest.
Giving a deep, audible sigh, Nat moved from the counter where he had been standing, looking out the window at the falling snow, to sit at the table. He was the first to admit it shocked him to his core, but he was finding that he didn’t mind her company. The small glimpse of the errant student he had gotten while she was at school did not portray her well.
At least he hadn’t minded her company until two days ago. He had been waiting for some sort of drama, the other shoe to fall, so to speak. There was no way that Alyssa could go this long without getting into some sort of trouble. In true Alyssa style, when she made mischief she made fireworks. He was still smarting from that day’s events. While he had given her a well-deserved, solid spanking that evening for one of the four things he promised she earned a punishment for, he hadn’t even touched the other items.
No, he hadn’t minded having her around the past twelve days. Twelve days, they had been snowed in for twelve days. It looked like it would continue for a good deal longer too. It wasn’t that he hadn’t found himself constantly peppering her bottom for one thing or another over those ten days, but Alyssa learned fast. She faced up to the mistakes she made, took responsibility for the rules she broke and accepted punishment without a fight. But at age twenty six, there were so many years to make up for, so many things that she should have learned growing up that she just hadn’t somehow and this latest incident was causing him to doubt his ability to be the person she needed in her life.
Alyssa rolled over in the now familiar bed and then instantly regretted the movement. Her bottom still hurt from the other night. ‘Two days,’ she thought to herself, ‘it was two days ago, and it still hurts!’ Not that she hadn’t deserved the spanking, however she still thought Nat could have been a little…lighter about it. It was just that being stuck here, all the time, it had to be cabin fever or something like that. She swore she was going stir crazy or something.
Thinking back to two days ago, however, the best solution to stir crazy probably would have been to read a book, not what she had come up with. It had been, what had become, a typical day. She had woken up around 8:30, 9ish. Stumbled downstairs in a sleepy haze, been greeted with a semi disapproving look from Nat when the first thing she went for was the coffee. One would have thought that he would be used to the fact that she lived and breathed coffee by this point, at least in the morning. Being here as long as she had, Alyssa had been forced to get used to the limited caffeine rule that Nat had going for her. It wasn’t happy.
Boredom was just never a good thing when it came to Alyssa. The look that Nat served her with, combined with absolutely nothing to do, it just led to trouble. She had said nothing about the disapproving look and had the one cup of coffee he allowed her. But it irked her, and for some reason it became one of those things she just couldn’t let go of. Who did he think he was to judge her? To manage her life? Yeah, she got it, he cared, blah, blah, blah.
If he hadn’t gotten stuck with her due to the crappy weather they’d still be on a ‘wave and fake a smile because it is just too awkward to be neighbors’ basis. Nat seemed to make it through the morning just fine. The fact that there was absolutely nothing to do didn’t phase him at all. That alone maddened her. How could he stand this? She was beginning to hate him for being this epitome of perfect that was dominating her life.
Maybe it was boredom, maybe it was her knack for trouble, probably a combination of both, however Alyssa volunteered to make lunch for them both. Nat had seemed relieved that she found herself something to do. She did love to cook, though they were running out of things to cook with. So she….improvised. She flavored Nat’s lemonade with a few eye drops and added a shot or two into the soup she served him.
As he sat at the table Nat thought back to the other day, the lunch debacle that had ensued. It still was beyond him that Alyssa was starting with practical jokes. While the amount of alcohol she had added into his meal hadn’t had that much of an effect on him, no more than a mild buzz, the act was what bothered him. She remained true to herself and confessed what she had done within ten minutes of his finishing lunch. Guilt and Alyssa just did not mix well. It was probably a good thing.
Due to his anger over the situation and the miniscule bit of alcohol in his system, Nat had sent her to what had now become her room. He cooked dinner that evening and intended to do so for every meal moving forward. As soon as the meal was ready, he went upstairs to see Alyssa, check what state she now had herself in, and have her come down for dinner.
He knocked before entering the small bedroom, and found her sitting on the edge of the bed, waiting for him. It was obvious that she had been crying as her eyes were red and puffy he could see the tear stains on her face. “Come down for dinner,” he instructed, his voice stern. He was aware that she wanted a hug, to know how she was going to be punished, to know how to right the situation. He wasn’t ready to give that to her at the moment. He did make sure to keep his tone stern, but not harsh or cold as it would only hurt the situation more than help.
When Nat had come into the room Alyssa wanted to run straight to him, fling her arms around him and beg for his forgiveness. The minute she saw his face and heard him speak, the tone in his voice, she knew that wasn’t an option at the moment. She was in trouble. She was more than in trouble. So, she silently followed him out of the room and down to the kitchen where a hot meal was waiting for her.
Sitting down she prayed that Nat would tell her…something, anything. Instead he picked up his fork and began to eat. The silence was killing her, but she did the same. Nat finished everything that was on his plate while Alyssa pretty much picked at the food in front of her, pushing it around on the plate, attempting to make it look like she was eating. Her stomach was in knots and there was no way that she could put anything in it without fear of possibly throwing up.
Nat gave a large sigh, which she definitely heard and automatically looked down at her plate. “Alyssa,” Nat said, “would I be correct in assuming that today’s lunch was a result of your boredom?”
While it was nearly painful to raise her head up to look at him as the look of disappointment in his eyes felt like a searing laser burning right through her, Alyssa finally willed herself to and then answered, “Yes, but the-“
Nat cut her off, surprising her and also evidencing how angry he truly was, as he said, “I would suggest you stick with yes sir or no sir at the moment.”
Nat had to admit, the shocked look on her face nearly caused him to smile. “Sir?” Alyssa responded, surprised at this. He had never required her to address him in this manner before. He forced himself to maintain the stern demeanor as he continued, “yes, Alyssa. You showed earlier today that you have no respect for me, my health or safety. You will learn to treat me, and others with respect, and that includes addressing me as such.”
Her eyes widened but she didn’t argue as he had expected. Instead she just nodded.
Nat continued, “this morning, did I ask you about whether you were bored? Did I inquire about whether we should find something to do?”
He saw her face and it was indescribable, there was guilt written all over it and it was obvious she was holding back tears. “Yes sir,” she finally whispered.
She looked so unhappy, so scared, it was nearly breaking his heart to be so hard on her. But the result of this could have been so much worse. “And you told me that you were fine, correct?”
“Yes, sir,” she replied after about thirty seconds. Nat nodded in acceptance of her answer.
Alyssa felt worse than dirt, worse than fungus, worse than…she didn’t know what, really should have paid better attention in biology. He must hate her, he thought that she had no respect for him. Oh, she was so stupid. If it was possible to actually mentally kick yourself, Alyssa was fairly sure that she’d be beyond bruised at the moment.
“So to clarify,” she heard Nat begin to speak again and she forced herself to listen to every word he said, “you have showed a total lack of respect for me, you lied to me, and played immature practical jokes that could have had serious consequences because you were bored?”
When he said it like that it sounded even worse. Alyssa just nodded at this and was thankful that Nat didn’t make her speak.
She nearly burst into tears when she heard what Nat announced next. “That is too long of a list to deal with at one time. So, tonight we are going to address the issue of respect, and over the next few days we’ll be discussing the rest. Now go up to your room.”
